All notable changes to Magic Lane Studio are documented on this page.

The format is based on Keep a Changelog, and Studio adheres to Semantic Versioning.

[1.0.0] - 2026-10-13

Magic Lane Studio 1.0.0 is a complete redesign of the map style editor and supersedes the previous version of Studio. Existing styles open directly from the portal, at the same address, and are saved to the same location.

Added

  • Editing against a live map: open a style by its address, change it, and every change is saved as you work, in order, with a failed save retried until it lands (Saving).
  • Layer list with groups: select several layers, drag to reorder, hide and show, and filter by name, id, colour or layer type (The layer list).
  • Styles with damaged parts, such as a layer with no type or a value the map cannot read, open without breaking the editor: a notice says which layers stop the map drawing the style and which are not drawn, Show these layers and the ⚠ chip in the layer list show only those layers, each one is marked with what is wrong, and a layer with no type can be deleted from the Properties column (Errors and troubleshooting).
  • In-App Layers: a route or highlight layer shows a sample route or search result when you ask for it, with Back to where you were and Simulate for the travelled part (In-App Layers).
  • Properties column with zoom ranges, zoom stops and easing curves on every paint property, a colour picker with a palette, text, icons and data filters (The Properties column).
  • Editing several layers at once: one change reaches every selected layer that has the property, as one undo step (Editing several layers).
  • Components screen: the map as Land & green, Water, Roads, Place labels, Points of interest and more, with the layers inside; one tick shows or hides a whole group (The Components screen).
  • Shared colours: every colour in the style under a name; change a colour once and every layer that uses it follows; a palette of up to 24 quick colours (Shared colours).
  • Themes: Day, Night or a brand theme in one style; with a theme selected, colour edits belong to it and everything else applies to every theme (Themes).
  • Image library: PNG, JPEG and SVG images stored in the style, used as icons on points and textures on lines and areas, with the layers that use each image one click away (The image library).
  • The style's font: TTF or OTF files of any size for the regular, bold and italic faces of every label, each used on its own, stored in the style like an image so it goes into every download; the map engine reads a face once, when it is added or the style is opened, behind a "Loading the style font…" notice; a file the browser cannot read is refused, a face the engine cannot load is reported with the reason, and a damaged font that came in with a style is marked (The style's font).
  • Data sources: upload GeoJSON, CSV, TSV, KML, GPX or line-delimited GeoJSON, or draw your own; a file with several kinds of shape becomes one source per kind; sources are tiled on the server and added to the style as layers; a source is public or private, and its panel says how many layers draw it (Data sources).
  • Drawing tools for points, lines and areas, with a handle on every point and on every edge to reshape them (Drawing on the map).
  • Map tools: place search, keyboard panning and zoom, a click on the map that lists the layers drawn there, and an address that carries the map position, so a link opens the same view (The map, settings and history).
  • Settings: light and dark appearance, density, colour vision simulation, place name language, the style's name, tags and resolution, the style's font, and a default map position (Settings).
  • History panel: undo and redo of every style edit, the list of steps, and named marks to return to (History).
  • Download dialog: a .style file for the Maps SDKs or the style's JSON, one theme per file, with the file name shown before you download and a warning when the style uses a private data source (Download).
